Chingrighata flyover closed in phases as Orange Line Metro enters final construction stage

Construction of Kolkata Metro's Orange Line between Kavi Subhash and Kolkata Airport has entered its final and most critical phase, prompting Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) to impose a 120-hour mega block at the Chingrighata flyover in two phases. According to officials, the first phase began at 8 pm on Friday and will continue until 8 am on Monday, while the second phase is scheduled from 8 pm on July 3 to 8 am on July 6. During both phases, all vehicular movement on the Chingrighata flyover will remain suspended to facilitate the installation of final girders for the metro corridor.

According to RVNL, girders will be installed between pillars 325 and 326 during the first phase and between pillars 326 and 327 during the second phase. Completion of this work will connect the Gour Kishore Ghosh Metro station with the main corridor, marking the final major engineering operation on this stretch. Kolkata Police have implemented traffic restrictions and diversion plans, directing vehicles travelling towards Salt Lake and Sector V through alternative routes, including Beliaghata Main Road and the EM Bypass crossing.

Officials stated that construction at Chingrighata had remained stalled for nearly two and a half years before work resumed at an accelerated pace. Following the completion of the main structural connection across the Chingrighata crossing in May, work is now focused on linking the structure with the station platform. Authorities are targeting completion of the Orange Line project by December 2026, with metro services expected to significantly improve connectivity between East Kolkata, New Town and the airport corridor.
